Literacy for a Lifetime

Literacy for a Lifetime

Tips for a Successful LFL

What is the Literacy for a Lifetime matching grant?
An Usborne LFL grant is an opportunity for a school to use non-budgeted funds to purchase Usborne Books and Products while increasing their yield by 50% (ie. The school receives $500 from a donor and is able to use that money to receive $750 [$500 original amount+$250, 50% match]— in books!!)

What are some possible funding sources you can use for LFL (minimum $250)?
-Donations from community members**
-Corporate donations** (check to see if their company matches individual’s donations)
-Book fair money earned from outside sources
-Box tops money
-Crowd-sourcing (read up on Book drives for more ideas http://daringdreamersusborne.blogspot.com/2016/03/book-drives.html)
**Tax deductible if the donation is given directly to the organization and it is a non-profit

Items Needed to fulfill the LFL
-If the organization is tax-exempt, a copy/PDF of their tax-exempt form
-List of books desired from the school (I will normally have them create a wishlist under their school name on my website and then fulfill the order through OrderPro based off of that list)
-Purchase Order Agreement (if they are paying via PO instead of check or CC) OR check/CC information depending on their payment selection

Fulfilling the Order on OrderPro
Step 1: Create a New Order using Organization info
-If the organization is near you, you can opt to have it sent to you.  This allows you to check the order and provide book plates to recognize the donor(s)
-If they are tax-exempt, check the tax exempt box and upload the tax-exempt certificate
Step 2: Name Your Order and Type
-Choose Literacy for a Lifetime (Prepaid by consultant) if you are paying via your CC and the organization is writing you a personal check
-Choose Literacy for a Lifetime (Billed to Organization) if you are submitting a purchase order or if the school writes a check to “Literacy for a Lifetime” or “Usborne Books & More”
—If you choose this option, be sure to click on the ‘View Organization Payment Info Screen’ tab and choose ‘Org will pay with a PO’ OR ‘Org will pay using a CC’.  On the payment screen at Step 5, you will be able to submit the Org’s CC card if that is the option they choose.  If they are paying via a PO, you will upload it under Step 2.  If they pay via check, write Halle an email advising you will be mailing in the check.  ***IFF you go this route—withOUT a PO—the order will not process or count toward sales until the check is received by HO***
-Fill out who the main funder is for the LFL (the corporation, individual, etc. who donated the funds)
-Upload PO (if using that option)
Step 3:
-Enter books up to the original donation amount under ‘Full Retail’
-Enter the 50% match under ‘Free Books’
Step 4: Review
Step 5: Enter payment information IF paying via CC (from consultant OR the organization). Otherwise, there should be no requirement for payment.

Submit the order.  Congrats! You are finished!  You should receive an email in the next couple of days from HO if there are any errors or questions, or if it is beginning processing.

Additional Questions?
-Read through the information found in back office toolbox.  There is a list of FAQs, letters, and brochure there!

⇒Giving Thanks!

Contact local papers, TV stations, school/library newsletters to publicize the donation and give the business or individual donor credit and appreciation.  You can also send thank you cards to the donors and encourage your organization to do so as well.  If possible, it is also sometimes appropriate to put a book plate in the book acknowledging the donor. Ex: “This book generously donated by____________”

Cards For A Cause Fundraising

Cards for a Cause is a fabulous fundraiser that Usborne offers! It's pretty simple to run and can earn the organization some funds and sell something that is really awesome and (not sugary sweet ;) ) It's a great alternative!

First. You want to find the organization. Anyone is eligible to run a CFAC (Cards For A Cause) fundraiser, and any organization is welcome to profit from it. If it is a school associated organization you will need to be an Educational Consultant AND you will need to have that school listed.

Ideas for who:
**Anyone who wants to earn some money** ;) Ha! But seriously, youth groups, mom & tot groups, Child Care Centers, Preschools, T-ball teams, Families (trying to earn money for an expense), the list goes on and on. Think outside the box! There really are SO many options!

Once you know the organization and they have committed to doing it, you will need to explain to the participants what they are doing, how to do it and why it's awesome. :)
How it works:
  • Everyone participating receives a pledge sheet ( You can find these in the supply store)
  • They go around selling boxes of cards. There are 4 different boxes to choose from. All Occasion #1, All Occassion #2, Thanks & Blanks, and Cards for Kids
  • Participants collect money as they go. All checks should be written out to the organization. All monies will go to the organization and they will only pay their portion for the boxes. This is how they immediately receive their funds.
  • Once all orders have been received Usborne receives $17/box and the organization keeps $13/box. If there is tax, you need to either take it out of the profit for the organization or cover it with your commission. The boxes will ship for free.
  • Submit the order in orderpro. You can ship them to yourself and deliver them, or you can ship directly to the organization. This is part of Step One. In step 2 you will title the order and under order type you will select "Cards for a Cause" You will see there are 2 options, prepaid by consultant or billed to organization. Select which you are doing and then you will go to the next step where you will input the amounts of each type of card box. After getting the correct amount of each box you will proceed to the summary and then finalize the order. If you have selected "prepaid by consultant" you will enter your payment info and proceed. The amount due will only be the $17/box +tax if applicable. The organization will have received all the money and you can request a check for the amount due for the boxes. If you select "bill to organization" you will have to attach a PO and you will still be required to enter you payment info but HO won't bill you because the PO is attached.

Numbers:
The total amount of sales is what is added to your retail numbers for the month. You earn 10% off the total amount sold in commission. So if you sold 100 boxes you would have $3000 in sales added to your sales for the month and you would earn $300 in commission. :)

How to approach someone about doing the fundraiser:
If you know of an organization trying to earn some money for an event you can always let them know, I am a consultant with Usborne Books & More and we have a fabulous fundraiser! It's called Cards for a Cause and basically it's boxes of cards and each box sold allows organizations to earn $13! Each box contains 30 cards that are cute and high quality. I do all the footwork and all I need you to do is help your participants get excited and help remind them and encourage them to sell.

TIPS:
I HIGHLY recommend getting the organizer on board and helping them set a goal. And then have that trickle down to each participant. So if the group as a whole wants to sell 100 boxes and there are 20 participants, each participants goal should be 5 boxes! 5 boxes seems much more doable than 100. And then you can offer prizes and incentives for hitting the goal or being the top seller or something along those lines.
Keeping in touch and reminders are great. Don't be afraid to check in. This will help keep the organizer involved and help keep them accountable for keeping things rolling.
Just like hosts in parties, you get them excited and keep them excited awesome things will happen! :)

Book Drives

Tips For A Successful Book Drive

What is a Book Drive?
An Usborne Book Drive is an opportunity for a consultant to give back to the community in the form of Usborne Books and Products.

Choose Your Charity
-- Pick a group, organization, school, etc. that you feel passionate about helping! Pick one that is near and dear to your heart or to someone special to you. The more you are onboard with the mission of this organization the more excited you are going to be, and that excitement rubs off on your donors/customers!
Examples: Family in need, homeless shelter, foster kids, low income school/group, sick children, organization that helps any of the above, etc.
-- Contact the charity/group/org to let them know what you would like to do. Make sure there are not rules and regulations you need to know about making donations. Ask to use their name and logos during the event. Get them on board and excited about the book drive. They may rally the troops for you and get more donors/customers involved!
-- If you are not sure which charity to help, ask around...post on Facebook asking friends to share about any orgs, families, kids in need of new books

Set A Goal -- When you collect at least $250, your funds will be matched 50% by Usborne Books & More by processing through our Book Fair or Literacy For a Lifetime
-- Set your goal high...what would you LOVE to do? Donate $1500 in books? Then set your donation amount for $1000...or more! If you set it for this, you will most likely collect well over $500...WHATIF you DO hit $1000 in donations, wouldn’t you be so happy you set that goal? There is no limit...THINK BIG!
-- Pick a time frame that you will run your Book Drive (I recommend 2 weeks) I find it’s easier to do a big push for a few days and keep the momentum high, rather than making it a long drawn out affair. Unfortunately, people will eventually lose interest, wait too long to order and never get around to it. It’s hard to stay hyped about hitting a goal for too terribly long!

Set Up Your Event
-- There are fantastic fundraiser site options where you can set up an event and have people donate money directly through that link. This adds not only credibility/professionalism to your book drive, it also makes donating VERY easy for your supporters.
-One option is https://www.YouCaring.com - with options like PayPal and WePay. Here is an example of a past book drive https://www.youcaring.com/ronald-mcdonald-house-charties-523114
NOTE: There will be a WePay/ PayPal fee, you may want to use some of your commission to cover that or adjust your goal to cover it. Also check to see if your org has a tax exempt ID you can use. (or you have to cover taxes on the books)

Set up a shopping link/event on your eCommerce page
-- When you create the event set it up as an eFair. This will give you more flexibility and more giving opportunity.
-- For an eFair you will receive 17% commission on all sales. The organization will receive 50% in free books for all sales at $250 and over!!! (That is the “hostess rewards/you will select those books when you go to close the party out in OrderPro)
-- Also when you set the event up as an eFair you have the choice to allow the customer to purchase books to be sent directly to themselves to add to your book drive total sales OR they can choose to buy and ship products directly to the charity you are supporting.

--From my experience people like simple so I have this available but don't mention it unless they ask. It's easiest to just donate cash from your fundraiser site.

Get Donations -- FB posts, FB messages, Texts, Emails, Phone Calls, In Person...it is VITAL to the success of your book drive to contact people individually.
-- It is VITAL to the success of your book drive to contact people individually. FB is a great route to do that...message ALL of them, let THEM decide if they want to donate towards your awesome literacy project!
-- You could contact businesses and get donations from them too!
-- Payment: They can pay you in cash, check, credit card, OR set up a PAYPAL account...it is free and easy!

Communication Tips: ⇒ FACEBOOK -- Share what you are doing and WHY...it is vital to connect with folks emotionally so that they too will want to be part of your book drive...many will THANK you for giving them the opportunity to participate!
-- Keep your message SIMPLE AND SPECIFIC and include:
         - Goal (to raise $______ to donate books to ________. All donations will be matched by UBAM 50%)
         - Chosen Charity and WHY!!
         - Deadline
-Post w/ updates and thank you’s! (I recommend about every 3-4 days)

⇒ PERSONAL MESSAGES (FB, TEXT, CALL)
-- Here is an example of what I sent to my friends.
"Hey Susan! Hope you are doing well! (or some personal message)
So I’m trying to reach out to everyone on FB...did you see the Ronald McDonald House book drive I’m running?
4 years ago the Ronald McDonald House was our home for 3 months while our girls were in the NICU and I would love to give back to them! I want to raise $1000 for books for the house and for families going through the same thing.
No worries if it is not in the budget...but if it is, we'd appreciate any help! Thanks so much! Here is the link to the fundraiser :) I'm running it for 2 weeks! (insert link)
-- I sent messages to EVERYBODY on my FB friend list. Even if I hadn't talked to them in a while. You would be surprised at who is willing to donate! Don't pre judge! (Be careful with too many messages all at once, you could be sent to FB jail! Spread them out :)

Home Parties

What if game- Bring You bring your Whatif Monster and read the book while you pass him around. Every time you say, "What if" he passes to the next person. The last person holding him is the winner. I usually give a copy of the book.

Deal or no deal" game at the end- there are a couple different ways you can run it. I also do a "bingo" where they fill out a board of books they like before I start talking, and they get to mark off any books I mention during my talk. whoever gets the most, or first to bingo gets a special prize.

FACEBOOK PARTIES

Facebook parties can be fantastic!!!! They are easy- you can do 2 in one night.. stay in your pajamas and you can meet a lot of people through Facebook. They can be very profitable for you and your hostess.

-Be Organized- Have a script ready to go for the pre party posts and during the party so you can just copy and paste.
Have all of your photos in different files... pre parties/games/party time/ for the host etc.

-Hostess Coaching- THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR BUSINESS. Your hosts need to be your new best friends and you need to develop a relationship with them so that they can trust you and listen to your tips and tricks. You need to get them excited and help them every step of the way- Without our hosts- we wouldn't have a successful business.
It is CRUCIAL to spend time with your hostess. Everyone wants tons of free books and everyone wants a successful party- you need to help make that happen.

First- Book a date: Day AND time (make sure you are on the same page with Time Zone)- Let her know that you will message or call her about 7-8 days BEFORE the party to help get her started.

A lot of consultants do it through Facebook messenger but CALLING is also a great idea! That way you can chat and she can ask questions and you can get to know each other more. (She could be joining your team you know) Get to know your hosts. Let her know that you genuinely want to help her have a successful party and want to be able to get her a lot of free books :)

If you don't call- send her a hostess coaching video 7-8 days before the show. Make sure you are still on the same page for date and time.

Coach on Who to invite and HOW- We don't want them to invite 500 friends to the party.
Tell them to make a list of all the friends they can think of that have kids and they think would LOVE the books. Send the FRANK GRAPHIC

After they have a list have them send them each a personal message.. It can be copy and paste -
"Hey! I'm having a live Facebook party with Usborne Books on (Date/TIME) . They have some great books that I just thought your family would really love. Would you like an invite?

Tell them that when they have 10-12 people that want to come to let you know :)

Once they have the 10-12 set up the event and message them "Great!! I made the event and you are now a cohost. Go ahead and invite those 10 that have said YES and then message them real quick saying "Hey I just sent you an invite to the book party we talked about. Do me a favor and RSVP right away so you don't miss anything. Thanks"
"I know that it takes a little bit of time but I promise it will help your party be successful! Keep going until you have about 20-50 people who want to come. :)

-Check in Daily with them- that way the party is fresh on their mind and they are continuing to invite and get people to rsvp..

On days before the party here are some other suggestions to send.

"Hey! How are invites coming along? I always tell people that a goal to have is 25 RSVPS.  When you have a spare couple minutes today, please add your own post on the page as a welcome to your guests, just a little something about how glad you are they can come, why you're excited about the books and think your friends will like them, etc.
Your own enthusiasm will be contagious, and staying active on your event page will help to make your party a success!"

"Hey! Just wanted to make sure you’re in the loop on our host rewards for the month. Here’s the chart of rewards you can expect. When your party reaches xxx amount.. you get an extra $50 in free books!!! WOOHOO!! Definitely start yourself a wish list now! Please also be sure to keep up on interacting with your event page and responding to my posts. Thanks! (Send monthly special)

ASK EVERY HOST if she wants to join and make her party her kick off party- She can earn the commission AND get the free books.

"Hey! Looks like things are going great with your invites! keep up great work with the inviting and follow-up! Thanks for putting your time into that! Just wanted to reach out to you and chat quickly about the business of working with Usborne. We are definitely in need of lots of help nationwide, and it’s a super fun way to earn some family income and build a home library. If you decide you’re interested, we can turn your party into your business kick-off and you can earn the commission in addition to the free books and the party bookings can go to you instead! Have you ever thought about doing what I do?

"Hello hello!!! Do have you have a favorite Usborne book? If you have time today post a picture of your favorite one or one that you are REALLY interested in. Your friends will love the recommendations and will help them get even more excited for your party!

"Hey I just wanted to check in and see if you have you had any questions from guests so far? Need any recommendations for your own wish list? We’ll want to have your wish list wrapped up and ready to go so that we can close out your party 24 hours after your event. Let me know if I can help out! Also, just a heads-up that as the host, you’ll be ordering your books direct through me instead of the website. Here is the host rewards again just in case you forgot. As mentioned in there- you will have to pay for shipping on the books which is 8% if you get over $75  :)

"Since the party is tomorrow night- today would be a great time to reach out to those who you have invited but haven't gotten an rsvp from yet.. Hey___ just reminding you of the party tonight! Please RSVP so you can get notifications and see the posts! It is going to be a lot of fun!!

"I'm so excited for your party tonight!! Please get online about 10 min before we start :) see you soon!"

Right before the party starts I also will send them this-  " Ready? Here we go! :D Please keep a look out for my first official “welcome,” which I’ll post right on time. I’d love it if you could keep track of which of your friends are showing up in the first few minutes, and then texting anyone who had a yes RSVP but hasn’t arrived yet. Just a quick reminder, like:
Hi! My book party is starting! Are you on your way? Just log into facebook and head over to the event! Thanks!

Here is a hostess graphic as well

-Here is a fantastic PowerPoint by the fabulous Tabatha Roach on Facebook parties . Click here

Before the party starts (usually the morning of or the day before-- you will want to go and TAG the people in the Newbie/Nut post and Tag the people who have RSVP"d but haven't answered yet... "Hey____!! Thanks so much for your RSVP for the party tonight! Just wanted to make sure you saw this question to help me out! "See" you tonight!
Also TAG those who haven't RSVP'd yet- "Hey___! Just reminding you of the party tonight here on Facebook! It will be so much fun! Please RSVP so you don't miss anything and I hope to "meet" you tonight!

Another suggestion- Sending a PM to people who are coming. Hi, I'm the book lady for (Hostess)'s upcoming Usborne FB party! She is just awesome, and we both appreciate your RSVPing! I LOVE helping people find just the right books for their kiddos, so if you'd like to send me the ages of your children and some things they're into right now, I can shoot you back some recommendations! Looking forward to partying with you soon, and please let me know if I can help with anything before the big night! Talk soon!

Posts on the event page- I like to post once a day to get people involved and to get excited - Keep them simple, fun, entertaining, and informative. I like to do pre party games where they PM the answers.. that way I can message and communicate with them and help with suggestions and to get to know the guests :)
Games, literacy tips, a couple of videos, or graphics with some awesome books

You can create customized wish lists for guests - all you need to know is age, gender, and a few of the things they like (princesses, trains, planes, coloring, learning to read, etc)

Send a PM to people- "Hi, I'm the book lady for (Hostess)'s upcoming Usborne FB party! Talk soon!"

Party Time

Keep it short- 45 min to an hour tops. Post the shopping link before so those who can't stick around can get an order in without having to wait/ also people can work on wish lists DURING the party with the link
Number your  posts
Follow a script
Show Videos

A couple ideas for posts to do during parties-  (keep it under 15 total posts)

1. I know many of you have long (and probably growing) wish lists, and one of the best ways to really save is to host your own Facebook party! Its super easy and very fun! And who doesn't want free books?!?!

*** As a bonus tonight, the first three people to comment below that they want to host will get a BONUS Flashlight book for FREE! Ready, set, GO!**

Here are two more ways to receive even more bookish goodies:

~ Select one of these dates and get an extra 20 raffle entries: Feb 16, 17, or 18th!
~ Order off this party AND book your own show and I will give you a 65% off coupon to use at your party!

(Post a pic of a hostess Haul)

2. We're back for our party wrap-up! Let’s do a quick game for your last chance to really stack up those raffle tickets for our grand prize. So here's how the game works: For every question you ask me about what it is like to work this business you get an entry! :)

3. If you love books, love discounts, and are looking for some extra income, I'd love to share with you more about my job! I'm currently looking for awesome ladies, just like you, to join my team and promote literacy! Did you know there are no minimums with Usborne to stress you out?! You can start for under $100 and just give it a try, plus you can work entirely from home doing FB parties just like this (I'll show ya how!)! Send me a quick message if you're interested in learning more. Now hang on tight while I tally up your party points! Back in a sec with tonight's winner!

4.   We not only have the best books around, we also have the best COMPANY. Usborne Books & More is a family-run business that is publicly traded and debt-free. We also have had over 2 years of continuous growth (some months up 230% from last year) and celebrated the largest sales month and quarter in our 25-year history. We are not just growing, we are ACCELERATING! Kids and parents LOVE our books.... and it shows!! Now is the time to join this great company because the best is yet to come!

5. Thank you everyone for coming! Wasn’t that fun?  Please take 2 minutes and fill out this survey!! I would really appreciate it!!!
I will stick around for a while to answer any questions you have while you finish your orders — just tag me if you need me! Get an invite to my VIP page when you spend $50 and free shipping when you spend 75! . I will announce the winner of our grand prize free drawing after the party closes (after all orders are placed) and I’ve had a chance to tally all the tickets!! Thanks again for joining us! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QSxTvJ7pj3DVkPju19Gdq2mFDJclTQb9iMpUwOAvx9E/viewform?usp=send_form

I like to post a thank you in the shopping link comments or on the page when people order.. "Thanks _____ for your order! You are going to love the ____book!!! (And I post a picture of a book that they bought)

Followups-  (Day after the party) - Followups are Super Duper Important and can double/triple your sales. The host NEEDS to message every single person that came but hasn't ordered yet- "Hey!!! Thanks so much for coming to the book party last night! I hope you had fun! Did you need any help with your order?"
She also needs to message everyone that did RSVP but didn't make it- "Hey! Missed you at the party last night! You can still browse the event and watch videos of the awesome books! I think your kids would LOVE the books in post 6!! Do you need any help with your order?"

Try to close the party within 24 hours

I like to offer free shipping on all orders over $75

Announce the winner of the free book AFTER the party has closed.

If you haven't looked into CINCHSHARE... do that- it can save your life.. You can schedule your posts to automatically post so you don't have to be online.. It is AWESOME

IF you are in your incentive (first 12 weeks) I LOVE this video! https://youtu.be/E6SSHDJW6Qs

Followup a week after the party- Have your books come in yet? I'd love to hear what you and your family think! If you post a picture and/or review on my business page, I'll give you 10% off your next order!

Here are some graphics that you can use pre party/ during/ or after- There are more in the consultant toolbox
